This was a view of the Wax Lake Outlet bridge on the Southern Pacific’s SUNSET ROUTE near milepost 91, about 11 miles west of Morgan City, Louisiana. This 13-mile channel - also known as the Calumet Cut – was completed in 1942 to provide an additional outlet from the Atchafalaya Basin to the Gulf of Mexico, and this photo was taken during unusually high water. The railroad bridge consists of three 400-foot thru riveted truss spans, with a 70-foot deck plate girder at each end. |
