Southern 5003
Title:  Southern 5003
Description:  5003 is heading back north at Barnwell, SC in 1979 with train 98. This rail line originally ran from Columbia, SC to Hardeeville where I understand Southern had trackage rights on ACL into Savannah. The line was abandoned from Hardeeville to Furman, SC in the 1960s. In the 1980s NS started abandoning more sections of this track. Ultimately, the line was abandoned to near Columbia, SC. At the time of this photograph, this section of the line through Barnwell was used only about once a week; usually on Saturday. Note the green Barnwell sign in front of the covered hopper marking the location. There was a depot or station of some sort located here but I never had a chance to photograph it before it was demolished.

Description:  Three GP38-2's and a U23B bring southbound train No. 169 across the Lake Pontchartrain trestle. The 5005 is flying white flags, so today's train is running extra. The gas cars are empty, so there is only one cover car behind the power. The other locomotives are 5138, 3918, and 5111. (month approximate)

Description:  1.9.1982 SOU 2855 GP38AC and SOU 5010 GP38-2 pull into Brunswick's Dock Jct. yard the morning's loads from Macon. Thirty seconds later the air dropped, the cars came to a screeching halt, and the first wood ship car seen here hits the ground and dumps it's load as it turns onto its side. Later that day, at the request of the Yardmaster, SCL brought in it's big hook from Waycross to loan to Southern to clean up the wreckage.
